Collect  Lord God, the well-spring of life, pour into our hearts the living water of your grace.  By your light we see light.  Increase our faith, and grant that we may walk in the brightness of your presence; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN.  Come, let us worship.

The Proclamation of the Word-

1st Reading:  Deuteronomy 4:15-24 (NRSV)

Since you saw no form when the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire, take care and watch yourselves closely, so that you do not act corruptly by making an idol for yourselves, in the form of any figure—the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth. And when you look up to the heavens and see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, do not be led astray and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples everywhere under heaven. But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of the iron-smelter, out of Egypt, to become a people of his very own possession, as you are now.The Lord was angry with me because of you, and he vowed that I should not cross the Jordan and that I should not enter the good land that the Lord your God is giving for your possession. For I am going to die in this land without crossing over the Jordan, but you are going to cross over to take possession of that good land. So be careful not to forget the covenant that the Lord your God made with you, and not to make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything that the Lord your God has forbidden you. For the Lord your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.

Psalm 5 (Book of Alternative Services page 708):

1             Give ear to my words, O Lord; * consider my meditation.

2             Hearken to my cry for help, my King and my God, * for I make my prayer to you.

3             In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; * early in the morning I make my appeal and watch for you.

4             For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, * and evil cannot dwell with you.

5             Braggarts cannot stand in your sight; * you hate all those who work wickedness.

6             You destroy those who speak lies; * the bloodthirsty and deceitful, O Lord, you abhor.

7             But as for me, through the greatness of your mercy I will go into your house; * I will bow down toward your holy temple in awe of you.

8             Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness, because of those who lie in wait for me; * make your way straight before me.

9             For there is no truth in their mouth; * there is destruction in their heart;

10          Their throat is an open grave; * they flatter with their tongue.1

1          Declare them guilty, O God; * let them fall, because of their schemes.

12          Because of their many transgressions cast them out, * for they have rebelled against you.

13          But all who take refuge in you will be glad; * they will sing out their joy for ever.

14          You will shelter them, * so that those who love your name may exult in you.

15          For you, O Lord, will bless the righteous; * you will defend them with your favour as with a shield.

Source of all justice and goodness, you hate deception and evil. Lead us in the paths of righteousness and keep us from falling into sin, that we may sing out our joy in Jesus Christ our Redeemer.  Amen.

2nd Reading:  2 Corinthians 11:1-21a (NRSV)

Paul and the False Apostles

I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness.  Do bear with me! I feel a divine jealousy for you, for I promised you in marriage to one husband, to present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.  But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by its cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.  For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you submit to it readily enough. I think that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. I may be untrained in speech, but not in knowledge; certainly in every way and in all things we have made this evident to you.Did I commit a sin by humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I proclaimed God’s good news to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. And when I was with you and was in need, I did not burden anyone, for my needs were supplied by the friends who came from Macedonia. So I refrained and will continue to refrain from burdening you in any way. As the truth of Christ is in me, this boast of mine will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!And what I do I will also continue to do, in order to deny an opportunity to those who want an opportunity to be recognized as our equals in what they boast about.  For such boasters are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.  So it is not strange if his ministers also disguise themselves as ministers of righteousness. Their end will match their deeds.

Paul’s Sufferings as an Apostle

I repeat, let no one think that I am a fool; but if you do, then accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. What I am saying in regard to this boastful confidence, I am saying not with the Lord’s authority, but as a fool; since many boast according to human standards, I will also boast. For you gladly put up with fools, being wise yourselves! For you put up with it when someone makes slaves of you, or preys upon you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or gives you a slap in the face. To my shame, I must say, we were too weak for that! But whatever anyone dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that.

Gospel Reading:  Matthew 6:16-23 (NRSV)

Concerning Fasting

‘And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.  But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Concerning Treasures

‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The Sound Eye

‘The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen.

Closing Prayer

Shield and protector of all, hear the prayers of those who call upon you, and set them free from violence, persecution and fear, that all may know that deliverance belongs to you.  We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. May the grace of God uphold you, the peace of God surround you, the love of God flow from you and the strength of God protect and bring you safely through this day.  Amen.
